Wow! What a great true story come to life!
I was riveted to the edge of my seat especially right towards the end when everything came together.. Allan Arkin and the others really made this movie come alive to me and I felt like I was right there in the camp with them.. This was definitely worth watching!

Right Off The Bat
The one and two star reviews below are repugnant.
The one star is far gone, a hard case.
Two star, a decent point and then the Stalin variation of , one death is a tragedy, a million a statistic.

A great movie
Gut-wrenching, tear-inducing, anger inciting but great. There aren't enough stars to give it.

Passable
This movie is passable, but I can't say it's great, because it gives a somwewhat false impression of how things went in the camps. For exmaple, the actors here are well-nourished and dressed quite well.
Perhaps the director wanted to emphasize only the "victory" (or "redemption"?) part of the story, but, considering that only half of the prisoners survived the attempt, and that this little afair was a drop in a sea of death, I think this movie misses something.

a heroic story
Although a bit slow at times (Rutger Hauer does not enter the scene for a full 60 minutes), this made for TV movie tells a heroic story of valor, luck & determination to give each enslaved person a choice for freedom. The lucky shirt exists in a museum today & the stories of those who survived the escape would make a great survival tale as well. It is one of the best films produced for television that I have seen.

Is public domain.
This movie was published without a copyright notice and there is no record of registration at copyright.gov, so I'd say it's public domain. It's available from various dollar DVD vendors.

surprised to see it in the public domain
Having attended Hebrew school for many years in my youth, I've seen this film about a dozen times and it never lost its power. I'm surprised (and delighted) to see it without copyright.

Stark delineation of inhuman acts
I jst finished watching this and, to be honest, I have a hard time keeping the tear out of my eyes. Certainly the final 10 minutes is a testimony to the indominatible will of people to survive, but the harrowing treatment they endured at the hands of sadistic murders, baby killers, rapists and the utter cold, slimey bastards that assembled themselves under a flag as a nation in those dark days is painful to watch.
Never again, indeed.
Arkin is superb.

Any other Rutger Hauer films online
First of all may I ask who is Rutgeur Hauer? (sorry for that)
I am wondering of there are more Rutger Hauer films in PD?
And if so can someone upload them.
I.ve seen in the Vaagheid forum post http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=163066 that Fatel Error isn't PD else I would have asked people to upload that one.
Further more I liked this film and hope there will be more.

Required
I remember first seeing this movie on TV years ago. It is still as powerfull as it was the first time, and should be required for all those who ask "why didn't they fight back"? It is also very personal, since some of my relatives were probably there, although long before the time of the breakout. Many thanks.

tragic film
display the hors of war and cruelty that one can afflick on another person. This film is the closest Ive seen to what happened in that time and war time. Very sad and heart felt for those who lost thier lives and the triumph for those who surrived.

Symbols of human tragedy and human bestiality
Taking into account that both Thomas 'Toivi' Blatt and Richard Rashke are writers of the film "Escape from Sobibor" ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092978/ ), I'd like to recommend the website "Sobibor - The Forgotten Revolt, by Thomas Toivi Blatt" ( http://www.sobibor.info/ ) to you. And let me quote the next words of Lech Walesa from the web page of that web site: "Sobibor remains as a reminder and a warning. But it also represents the testimony of a people and their dignity, and a triumph for all of humanity." ( http://www.sobibor.info/more.html )
I'm going to encourage my students to study within the framework of unit 13. Digital Libraries ( http://www.geocities.com/eklezjastka/ester2-13.html ) of the e-course "Europe's Information Society" ( http://www.geocities.com/eklezjastka/ester2.html ) also the problem "Digital Gardens of Memory" connected with the film "Escape from Sobibor."

Why is a 1987 Feature Film here?
Isn't this movie under copyright? Has the copyright owner placed it here? Just curious - I notice that there's no Commons licence associated with this.

Worth Every Moment
Gut-wrenching and riviting through the entire view this dramatization of how Jewish civilians and Jewish-Russian soldiers managed to escape the Sobibor death camp is an emotionally charged and well done movie. It is both painful to watch as a reminder of the history of the German-agenda during Hitler's reign as well as inspiring for eventual freedom achieved.
Not only were Alan Arkin and Rutger Hauer excellent in their roles but so was the entire cast.
