How to get started?

Hello. Nick here.

I have been "lurking" for a long while now and played quite a bit in the past. The IRC channel does no seem to have anyone it, unless I'm doing something wrong.
I am interested in source and mods, but I know very little about it. I would like to learn and am curious if there is any way I can be helpful. I am not in school or employed, with nothing on my hands but time and stimulants.
I don't expect to be trusted with the beta, but if there is anything I can help with, teach me how to do it and I will.

Thanks lmk

tbh I think the time would be much better spent on actually doing the work rather than teaching someone new how to do it. If you can model or map or anything like that then you could be helpful. Doesn't have to be coding or anything like that.

Hey Nick,
The IRC has been down for a long time (not sure exactly how long), and the SF community is pretty much dead.
We paused the development of SF2, known as Project Haven, since various of our developers are in exam period (university projects due at that time too). but once we get back and running, we might look for new beta testers if some of the actual beta testers don't show enough interest.

To be honnest with you, modding with Source is pretty much dead. If I were you, I would learn UDK, as you can make pretty stuff easily in there, and it's what most game companies use to build their game (if they don't have their own engine).
It's not worth putting the time learning Source anymore. Unless they release a shiny, new update for it's tools. Not sure if that will ever happen, but you might wanna check back once CS:GO and HL2:ep3/HL3 gets released.

Hey Az, thanks for the reply.
I can (kinda) do some mapping. Is there anywhere I can download a map that has SF2 block spawns, Capture points/flags implemented? I'd like an example to know where to begin.
I would very much love to beta test your game, I'm free to do so if every you need more testers.
Well, I don't know when Diablo 3 is being released, but I will Not be free for at least a couple of days after it is.
I think Source has still got life left, as Valve is still using it and it's one of the most solid engines even today. I'm sure it will receive some hefty updates in the future.
Thanks

we don't plan on releasing any fgd (contains entities code for hammer) yet, since it will be changing often.
sorry.

Ha Ha. English only. I've recently installed a program on my computer called Phaseexpress that's supposed to increase efficiency while typing, but so far it just makes me look like Google translator. don't think I'll keep it but it's a cool idea.

When are your guys' exam period up? because it would be cool if more people were active. I do know some very basics of mapping but am curious about SF/PH specific stuff, like block spawners, flags (same as 1.9.x?) and Capture points. Also curious if the size or shape of CP maps should differ from ctf maps. I've started drawing up ideas for some maps but I don't know what kind of gameplay PH will favour.

Thanks again
